“I can only describe Katie Bannon as a godsend. In six months, with Katie’s steady presence, I wrote four chapters, a query letter and a proposal. I got a dream agent and I am about to go on submission. None of this would have been possible without Katie’s guidance."

- Oona M.

Coaching

My coaching gives you the structure & guidance you need to keep writing.

Together, we’ll develop an action plan for meeting your goals – coming up with deadlines, scheduling regular check-ins, and helping establish a writing practice tailored to how you work best. We can also address “Writer’s Block” and any mental or emotional blocks coming between you and your writing. I can read your writing-in-progress and provide high-level feedback, identifying what’s working and possible directions for the story. The content of our coaching calls is customized to meet your individual needs.

Note: Coaching sessions take place remotely, either via Zoom or phone.

Developmental Editing

My action-oriented feedback gives you a Roadmap to Revision and puts you on track for publication.

I have 10 years of experience in developmental editing, with particular expertise in memoir, personal essay, and narrative nonfiction. My specialty is helping writers shape personal narratives into expertly crafted stories that have universal resonance. I love working with writers to find the “story” behind the “situation” of their lives, uncovering the beating heart of a narrative that will move readers from all walks of life. Together, we’ll make your writing the best it can be, and make you the best writer you can be.

I provide a lot of feedback as an editor.

I believe feedback is a gift and view critique as a sign of respect. Hiring an editor is an investment, and my job is to make your money worth it. I do this by offering comprehensive, honest feedback that will help your writing reach its full potential. If you’re looking for an editor who will coddle you, I’m probably not the best fit. But if you’re ready to make your manuscript the most well-crafted, marketable book possible, we might be a perfect match.

  • This edit centers on big-picture aspects of your manuscript: structure, character development, narrative tension, world-building, voice, narration, etc. I leave an average of 2 to 4 margin comments per page, along with a 7 to 10-page Roadmap to Revision letter summarizing my feedback and laying out a revision plan. I begin the letter by describing what’s working in the manuscript -- scenes or chapters that flowed particularly well, craft elements that were executed effectively -- and then address what can be improved upon. My focus is on the key craft elements of the genre (structure, character, voice, narration, etc.) rather than sentence-level issues that are likely to shift as you revise. Please note that this offering does not include line editing.

Rate: $2200 for up to 80,000 words. [A Zoom conversation can be added for an additional fee].

  • The first 25 pages can make or break a manuscript. I’ll evaluate your first 25 (double-spaced, standard format) pages to assess how well they “hook” the reader and showcase your writing chops through craft techniques (structure, character, voice, narration, etc.). This includes margin comments, as well as a one-page editorial letter summarizing my feedback and laying out a revision plan. Please note that this offering does not include line editing.

Rate: $300. [A Zoom conversation can be added for an additional fee].

“Katie is a remarkably astute reader and, in the best sense of the word, critic. She identifies specific, detailed text issues, as well as larger narrative challenges, often suggesting novel approaches to solving problems that seem prohibitively complicated to the writer.”
